Fong Yim Fun: Life and Work of a Female Cantonese Opera Artist
Thematic Gallery (5),
Hong Kong Heritage Museum 09 October 2002 - 07 April 2003
The second in a series designed for the Women Festival, this exhibition looks back on the career of the famous Cantonese opera artist Fong Yim Fun and celebrates her distinguished artistic achievements.
Fong Yim Fun started her stage career in the 1940s, playing many memorable roles with great success and earning the vote of opera fans in 1952 as "Queen of Female Principals", a much coveted title that is a mark of the highest acclaim. Her singing was so expressive that it soon gave birth to a separate school - the Fong Style - in the art of Cantonese opera singing. Her career marked a golden era of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. Showcasing over 100 valuable exhibits including costumes, librettos, publicity materials and photos of Fong Yim Fun, the exhibition will also screen excerpts from Fong's best known opera films and recent charity performances, while visitors will have the chance to collect a set of postcards developed from stills of this outstanding woman artist. A series of education and extension programmes including a talk, a discussion, 2 family workshops and 3 public guided tours will be organised. Exhibit Highlights
