Chao Shao-an Student Exhibition Series 1
One of the most renowned painters of the Lingnan School, Professor Chao Shao-an (1905-1998) also made an important contribution to art education by establishing the Lingnan Art Studio in Guangzhou in 1930 and later in 1948 in Hong Kong. The Museum has organized a Student Exhibition Series to study the ways in which features of the Lingnan School are carried on in its students' works and how innovations have been introduced by individual artists. A native of Dongguan in Guangdong province, Henry Wo Yue-kee was born in 1927. He took up the study of painting – both Western and Chinese styles – at the International Art School in Hong Kong in 1947, before becoming a student of Chao Shao-an in 1949. 1955 saw him start his teaching career and hold his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, and since then he has presented many exhibitions of his works in Hong Kong and overseas. He moved to the USA in 1975, where he continued to paint and to teach. This exhibition features over 40 paintings with a variety of subjects – flowers and plants, birds, animals and landscapes – and spanning five decades of creation. Wo excels in painting the lotus, depicting the plant in different seasons and weather conditions with a highly poetic mood. Exhibit Highlights
