Humour is the best way to add spice to busy city life. While it may not always work the way we want, seeing the funny side can still put a smile on your face. Comics with funny themes first appeared in Hong Kong in the early 20th century. Over the decades, comic artists have created a host of cute characters and captivating storylines. Some of these printed artworks even jumped onto the silver screen, giving rise to creative cultural peripherals and enriching Hong Kong’s popular culture.

Taking the perspective of comic artists, this exhibition opens the door to the magical world of comics by presenting exhibits associated with Hong Kong comedy comics from different periods, including manuscripts, comic books, comic byproducts, art installations and multimedia programmes. Visitors can take photos with comic characters from different periods and gain insights into the inspiration of comic artists. This retrospective of important works that have amused us from the 1950s to the present brings to life the unique charm of Hong Kong comedy comics, as well as their creative concepts and artistic features. Visitors are encouraged to try their hand at drawing comics and listen to comic artists’ stories through multimedia programmes. This is a great opportunity to appreciate the uniqueness of the hilarious memes of Hong Kong and how the trade practitioners are keeping Hong Kong comics alive.

The exhibition is one of the programmes of the “Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2025”.
