A Star on the Stage and on the Silver Screen – The Stage Art of Ng Kwan Lai

Renowned Cantonese opera artist Ng Kwan Lai achieved extraordinary accomplishments in all four basic aspects of Cantonese opera – singing, acting, delivery of lines and martial arts. She joined a number of large troupes including Lai Sing Opera Troupe, Fei Fan Heung Opera Troupe and Chung Sun Sing Opera Troupe, and performed with renowned artists like Mak Bing Wing, Ho Fei Fan, Fung Wong Nui and Lam Kar Sing, they successfully built a repertory of Cantonese opera classics such as Two Immortals at the Pavilion of the Moon, Presenting a Sword at Hundred-Flower Pavilion and The Story of Chu Pin's Loyalty to the Sung Dynasty which won huge popular acclaim. After retirement from the stage, Ms. Ng donated more than 3,500 cultural items to Hong Kong Heritage Museum, including costumes, chests for opera paraphernalia, scripts and photos related to the plays she performed in the past, which are invaluable for promoting and passing on the traditions of Cantonese opera.

Ms. Ng passed away on 26 September 2018. To commemorate this opera great, the Museum presented eight movies starring Ms. Ng at the Museum's Theatre during December 2018. "A Star on the Stage and on the Silver Screen – The Stage Art of Ng Kwan Lai" exhibition displaying the paraphernalia of Ms. Ng including costumes, headgears, scripts and photos will be on display at the Museum's Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall until 25 February 2019, allowing the visitors to revisit her spectacular performing career and pay tribute to her.
