"The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Dunhuang: Enchanting Tales for Millennium" Talk Series

The Landscape Paintings of Dunhuang Murals

The Dunhuang Caves are adorned with magnificent murals featuring an array of Buddhist deities and preaching scenes as well as landscapes. The ubiquitous presence of these landscape scenes can be found across murals scattered in portraits, narrative paintings and sutra tableaux, proving them to be exquisite works of ancient art. Dr. Zhao will reinterpret the Dunhuang murals from a new aesthetic perspective, taking the audience on a tour of the landscape and experiencing a different artistic ambience.

The Sutra of Filial Piety

There were two versions of sutras of filial piety in the Taisho Tripitaka that focus on the idea of repaying gratitude towards one's parents. The first version was translated by An Shigao, while the other version was found in Dunhuang. But why did An's version become fade out, while the other version still prevailed on among the Chinese people? What is the relationship between them? These questions will be addressed and explained in this talk.

The Religious Culture of the Medicine Buddha in Sutra Illustrations in Dunhuang

The Medicine Buddha sutra illustrations in Dunhuang began in the Sui dynasty and flourished in the Tang dynasty, as a result of the combination of Pure Land beliefs with Tantric elements and gradual indigenisation. This talk will explore how the Medicine Buddha can cure and relieve sufferings, and bring happiness to all sentient beings, through looking at the sutra illustrations.
