1. Talks

Chao Shao-an in the Context of Lingnan Painting

Since the 20th century, the Lingnan School of Painting has evolved into two major camps: tradition and innovation. As a disciple of Gao Qifeng, one of the founders of the Lingnan School of Painting, Chao Shao-an embraced innovative painting concepts, striving for progress in his art. This resulted in a fresh and natural style that appealed to both refined and popular tastes. He also remained grounded in the literati tradition of Chinese painting, opening a studio to teach and pass on his knowledge and allow his art and philosophy to flourish and spread through his students. In the broader context of Lingnan painting, Chao Shao-an emerged as a pivotal figure in the 20th-century Lingnan art scene. This talk will explore his artistic achievements and historical significance.

Eclecticism and Innovation: Exploring the Characteristics of the Lingnan School of Painting from Gao Jianfu to Chao Shao-an

The Lingnan School of Painting emerged in the early 20th century, finding fertile ground in Guangzhou and Hong Kong owing to their exposure to overseas artistic trends. The School’s aesthetics, artistic styles and techniques were shaped by the political orientation and practical needs of its pioneer, Gao Jianfu. By integrating elements from both Eastern and Western art, he employed innovative techniques to adapt to the visual preferences of the time to popularise art and attract public attention. The Lingnan School of Painting has continued to advance and develop through the efforts of its member artists, securing an important place in modern art history. This talk will discuss key characteristics of the artistic development of the Lingnan School of Painting from Gao Jianfu to Chao Shao-an.
